Write for an Academic Discussion

A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.

Your professor is teaching a class on social studies.

In your response, you should do the following.

  • • Express and support your opinion.
  • • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor’s question:

Many cities face a dilemma regarding old, historic buildings. On one hand, preserving these structures maintains a connection to the past and adds unique character to a city. On the other hand, a growing population requires new, modern, and efficient housing and commercial spaces. In your view, should cities prioritize the preservation of historical buildings, even if it limits new development? Why or why not?

Student response 1:

I strongly believe we should prioritize preserving historic buildings. They are a tangible link to our history and give our cities a unique identity that new buildings cannot replicate. For instance, a historic downtown area often becomes a cultural and tourist hub, which benefits the local economy.

Student response 2:

While I appreciate history, I think progress is more important. Old buildings are often expensive to maintain and not energy-efficient. Therefore, it makes more sense to replace them with modern structures that can better serve the community's needs, such as affordable housing or updated public facilities.
