Professor’s question:

Our discussion today is on the importance of sleep for cognitive function and overall well-being. Many health experts argue that getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep is the single most important factor for mental clarity. Others suggest that a healthy diet and regular exercise can compensate for shorter sleep periods. Which factor do you think is more critical for a person's daily performance and long-term health? Why?


Student response 1:

I think getting enough sleep is non-negotiable for good health. When you don't sleep well, it's hard to concentrate and learn effectively, regardless of how well you eat. Therefore, prioritizing sleep is the foundation for everything else, including having the energy to exercise.


Student response 2:

While sleep is important, I believe a balanced approach is key. A nutritious diet and consistent exercise can significantly boost energy and mood, even on days with less sleep. For example, a morning run can make you feel more alert than an extra hour of poor-quality sleep.
