Professor’s question:
Many universities are considering a policy that would require all first-year students to live in on-campus dormitories. Proponents say this helps new students build a sense of community, make friends, and adapt more easily to university life. Opponents argue that this policy removes students' autonomy and can be an unnecessary financial burden. Do you think universities should require first-year students to live on campus? Why or why not?
Student response 1:
Yes, I think it's a great idea because it helps with the social transition to university. Living in dorms forces students to interact with their peers and participate in campus events, which is crucial for building a support network. Consequently, they are less likely to feel isolated during their first year.
Student response 2:
I disagree with this policy, however. University students are adults and should have the freedom to choose where they live. For many, living at home or in an off-campus apartment is a much more affordable option. Mandating dorm life could therefore create significant financial stress for students and their families.
