Professor’s question:
We often discuss the connection between our daily habits and our mental well-being. Social media platforms have become a huge part of many people's lives. Some researchers argue these platforms negatively impact self-esteem by promoting unrealistic comparisons. However, others suggest they can create supportive communities and reduce isolation. Which effect do you think is more significant for young adults? Why?
Student response 1:
I think social media mostly harms self-esteem. This is because people usually only post their best moments and edited photos, creating a false reality. For example, constantly seeing these perfect images can make someone feel inadequate about their own life, which is certainly not good for their mental health.
Student response 2:
On the other hand, I believe social media can be very positive. It allows people with specific problems to find each other and form supportive groups. For instance, someone with a rare health condition can connect with others who understand, which helps them feel less alone because they have a community.
