Professor’s question:

Let's discuss how social media affects our real-world social skills. On one hand, some sociologists argue that extensive use of these platforms can weaken our ability to communicate face-to-face, as we become less practiced at reading nonverbal cues. On the other hand, others suggest it can help shy individuals build confidence and find communities they might not otherwise have access to. Which of these views do you find more convincing? Why?

Student response 1:

I believe social media generally weakens our social skills because it removes the need for direct interaction. People get used to carefully crafting messages and using emojis instead of expressing real emotions. As a result, when they are in a real conversation, they can feel awkward and struggle to connect.

Student response 2:

I see it differently. For many people, especially those who are shy, social media is a valuable tool for building confidence. They can practice communicating in a low-pressure environment with others who share their interests. Consequently, this can make them more willing to engage in face-to-face conversations later.
