Write for an Academic Discussion

A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.

Your professor is teaching a class on psychology.

In your response, you should do the following.

  • • Express and support your opinion.
  • • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor’s question:

Today's topic is motivation. We can generally categorize motivation into two types: intrinsic, which comes from an internal desire or passion for an activity, and extrinsic, which is driven by external rewards like money, grades, or praise. In the context of work or education, which type of motivation do you think is a more effective driver for long-term achievement and satisfaction? Please explain your reasoning.

Student response 1:

I am convinced that intrinsic motivation is more powerful for long-term success. When you genuinely enjoy a task or subject, you are more likely to persist through challenges and put in your best effort without needing someone to reward you. For example, an artist who paints for the love of creating will likely have a more fulfilling and sustainable career.

Student response 2:

I have to argue that extrinsic motivation is more practical and effective in the real world. While passion is important, rewards like a good salary or a promotion are powerful incentives that push people to perform well consistently. Similarly, the desire for a high grade is a strong motivator that ensures students complete their coursework, even if they don't love the subject.
