Professor’s question:

For decades, many universities have relied on standardized test scores as a key part of their admissions process. Proponents argue these tests offer an objective measure of a student's academic readiness. However, critics claim they can be unfair to students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. In your opinion, should universities continue to use standardized tests for admission? Why or why not?

Student response 1:

I believe standardized tests are essential for university admissions because they provide a single, objective benchmark. For instance, it allows admissions officers to compare students from thousands of different high schools fairly. This makes the process more equitable for everyone, even though the system is not perfect.

Student response 2:

I disagree. Standardized tests don't show the whole picture of a student's abilities, such as their creativity or resilience. Furthermore, students from wealthier families can afford expensive tutoring, which gives them an unfair advantage. Therefore, relying heavily on these tests can create inequality in the admissions process.
