Professor’s question:
Many universities are debating the kinds of food they should offer in their cafeterias. Some administrators believe that universities have a responsibility to promote healthy habits by primarily offering nutritious food like salads, fruits, and lean proteins. However, others argue that students are adults who should have the freedom to choose what they want to eat, including less healthy but popular options like pizza and fried foods. Should university cafeterias prioritize healthy food over student choice? Why?
Student response 1:
I think universities should definitely prioritize healthy options because they have a role in supporting student well-being. Good nutrition is directly linked to better concentration and academic success. For example, by making healthy food more visible and appealing, the university can help students build positive eating habits that will last a lifetime.
Student response 2:
I believe that while offering healthy food is important, the main priority should be student choice. College students are adults and can make their own decisions. Furthermore, restricting popular comfort foods could make students unhappy and lead them to eat off-campus more often. A balance between healthy options and popular favorites is the best approach.
