Professor’s question:
Today, let's discuss the role of digital books, or e-books, in learning. With the rise of tablets and e-readers, students can now carry hundreds of books on a single device. Many argue that e-books are more convenient, accessible, and environmentally friendly. On the other hand, some research suggests that reading on a screen can be more distracting and lead to lower comprehension. Which format do you believe is better for academic study: digital or printed books? Why?
Student response 1:
I think e-books are superior for academic purposes because of their convenience and search functions. Being able to instantly search for a specific term in a textbook saves an immense amount of time during research. In addition, they are generally less expensive and take up no physical space, which is great for students.
Student response 2:
I feel that printed books are still better for serious study. It's easier to focus on a physical page without the distractions of notifications or the temptation to browse the internet. Moreover, I find it much easier to remember information when I can highlight it physically and make notes in the margins of a real book.
