Write for an Academic Discussion Test #015
Write for an Academic Discussion
A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.
Your professor is teaching a class on social studies.
In your response, you should do the following.
- • Express and support your opinion.
- • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.
Professor’s question:
Some high schools and universities are moving away from traditional letter grades (A, B, C) and toward a pass/fail grading system, especially for non-major courses. Proponents believe this system reduces student anxiety and encourages them to take challenging courses without fearing a low grade. However, opponents say it removes the incentive for students to strive for excellence. Which system do you think is better for student learning? Why?
Student response 1:
I believe a pass/fail system is better because it fosters a healthier learning environment. It allows students to explore subjects outside their comfort zone purely for the sake of knowledge, not just to protect their grade point average. This reduces unnecessary stress and encourages genuine intellectual curiosity.
Student response 2:
I think the traditional grading system is more effective. Grades provide important feedback and motivate students to put in their best effort to achieve a high mark. Without that incentive, some students might only do the minimum work required to pass. Therefore, letter grades are better for encouraging hard work.
