Write for an Academic Discussion
A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.
Your professor is teaching a class on health.
In your response, you should do the following.
- • Express and support your opinion.
- • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.
Professor’s question:
Many universities are considering ways to promote healthier lifestyles among students. One proposal is for campus cafeterias to exclusively offer healthy food options, removing sugary drinks and fried foods. Supporters say this would directly improve student nutrition. Critics, however, argue it limits personal choice and may drive students to eat off-campus instead. Do you think universities should enforce such a policy? Why or why not?
Student response 1:
I agree with this policy because it makes healthy eating the default and easiest option for busy students. Many of us grab whatever is convenient between classes. Therefore, having only nutritious choices available would positively influence our long-term health habits without us even thinking about it.
Student response 2:
I disagree because it feels too restrictive. University students are adults and should be trusted to make their own food choices. Forcing a specific diet on everyone is not educational. Furthermore, students who want unhealthy options will simply go off-campus, so the policy might not even be effective.
