Write for an Academic Discussion

A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.

Your professor is teaching a class on psychology.

In your response, you should do the following.

  • • Express and support your opinion.
  • • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor’s question:

Let's discuss the concept of birth order. Some psychologists believe that whether you are the oldest, middle, youngest, or only child has a significant and predictable impact on your personality. For example, oldest children are often said to be natural leaders. Others argue this is an oversimplification and that personality is shaped by many more complex factors. Do you think birth order is a major factor in shaping who we are? Why?

Student response 1:

I do believe birth order plays a significant role. In my experience, the stereotypes often hold true. Oldest children tend to be more responsible because they are given more duties at home. For instance, they often have to look after their younger siblings, which helps them develop leadership skills.

Student response 2:

I think the importance of birth order is exaggerated. While it might have some small influence, factors like parenting style, friendships, and life experiences are much more critical in shaping personality. For example, two first-born children from different families can have completely opposite personalities, which shows other factors are at play.
