Professor’s question:
Many cities around the world are discussing whether to ban cars from certain downtown areas to create pedestrian-only zones. Supporters argue this would reduce air and noise pollution, encourage physical activity, and make city centers more pleasant. However, opponents worry that such bans could hurt local businesses by making them harder to access for customers who drive. Do you think the benefits of creating car-free zones in city centers outweigh the drawbacks? Why?
Student response 1:
Yes, I believe the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks. Creating pedestrian-only zones makes cities much more livable by reducing traffic danger and pollution. Furthermore, these areas often become vibrant social hubs with cafes and events, which can actually attract more people and boost the local economy in the long run.
Student response 2:
I think the drawbacks are too significant. Many people, especially the elderly or families with children, rely on cars for transportation. Banning vehicles would make it very difficult for them to visit downtown shops and services. As a result, businesses could lose many customers and potentially fail.
