Professor’s question:
The concept of a four-day work week is gaining popularity. Supporters claim that with an extra day off, employees are more rested, focused, and productive during their working hours, leading to better overall mental health. Critics, however, argue that it could lead to longer, more stressful workdays and may not be practical for all industries. Do you think a four-day work week is a positive development for most businesses?
Student response 1:
I am in favor of the four-day work week. I think giving employees more personal time would significantly reduce burnout and improve morale. Since workers would be happier and more rested, their productivity during the four days on the job would likely increase, benefiting the company in the long run.
Student response 2:
I see some problems with this idea, especially for customer-facing businesses. A shorter work week could mean reduced availability and slower service, which might frustrate clients. For example, it would be difficult for a clinic or a retail store to simply close for an extra day each week.

- Syntactic variety and appropriate word choice
- Mostly appropriate social conventions
- Few lexical or grammatical errors

The response generally accomplishes the task. Limitations in language facility may prevent parts of the message from being fully clear and effective.

A typical response exhibits one or more of the following:

- Some connected sentence-level language, with a limited range of syntax and vocabulary
- An accumulation of errors in sentence structure and/or language use
SCORE 1: An unsuccessful response
The response reflects an ineffective attempt to address the task. The message may be limited to the point of being unintelligible.
A typical response exhibits one or more of the following:
- Very little elaboration, if any
- Telegraphic language (i.e., short and/or disconnected phrases and sentences) with a very limited range of vocabulary
- Serious and frequent errors in the use of language
- Minimal original language; any coherent language is mostly borrowed from the stimulus
