Professor's question: To combat health issues like obesity and diabetes, some governments have introduced special taxes on sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks. The goal is to discourage consumption of these items. However, opponents argue that such taxes unfairly penalize people with lower incomes and represent an overreach of government power. In your opinion, should governments use taxes to influence people's food choices? Why or why not?

Student response 1: I support these taxes because they can be an effective public health tool. This policy encourages people to reconsider their daily choices and perhaps opt for healthier alternatives. As a result, the revenue generated can be used to fund health education programs or subsidize healthier food options for everyone.

Student response 2: I don't think this is a fair or effective approach. These taxes often disproportionately affect people with lower incomes, who may rely on cheaper food options. Moreover, individuals should have the freedom to make their own dietary choices without government interference, even if those choices are unhealthy.
