Professor’s question:
Many universities have a policy requiring first-year students to live in on-campus dormitories. The goal is often to help new students adjust to university life, build friendships, and feel more connected to the campus community. However, this policy can be a significant financial burden for some families and limits students' freedom of choice. Do you think this first-year on-campus living requirement is a beneficial policy? Why or why not?
Student response 1:
I strongly support the on-campus living requirement. It helps new students build a strong social network right away because they are constantly interacting with peers. This sense of community is crucial for adjusting to college life; for example, it makes finding study partners much easier and reduces loneliness.
Student response 2:
I believe students should have a choice. Forcing them to live on campus can be very expensive, and some students might prefer a quieter living environment off-campus. Moreover, learning to manage an apartment and commute is a valuable life skill that living in a dormitory doesn't teach.
