Good morning. Today, we're beginning our unit on social psychology, and I want to introduce a foundational concept: cognitive dissonance. This is the mental discomfort experienced by a person who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. For example, a person might believe that smoking is unhealthy, but they continue to smoke. This conflict creates a feeling of unease. The theory suggests that we are motivated to reduce this dissonance by changing our attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors.
