Professor’s question:

In our discussion on higher education, let's consider a common university policy. Many universities require first-year students to live in on-campus housing, or dormitories. The stated goal is to help new students adapt to college life and build a sense of community. However, this requirement can also create financial challenges and limit students' independence. In your opinion, do the benefits of mandatory on-campus housing for first-year students outweigh the drawbacks? Why or why not?

Student response 1:

I believe living on campus is essential for new students because it helps them build strong social connections and feel like part of the school community from the very beginning. For instance, it's much easier to join study groups or attend campus events. As a result, students often adjust more quickly.

Student response 2:

I disagree with this requirement because it can be a significant financial burden for many families. Dormitories are often more expensive than off-campus apartments. Furthermore, students should have the freedom to choose their own living situation, especially if they prefer a quieter environment away from the busy campus.
