Professor: Today, I want to introduce a key concept in social psychology: cognitive dissonance. This is the mental discomfort a person experiences when they hold two or more conflicting beliefs, ideas, or values. For example, a person might know that smoking is unhealthy, but they continue to smoke anyway. This conflict between their belief and their behavior creates a state of dissonance. To reduce this discomfort, they might try to change their belief, perhaps by convincing themselves that the health risks are exaggerated.
