Professor’s question:
Professor's question: Some public health experts advocate for placing a special tax on sugary drinks and junk food to discourage consumption and reduce health problems like obesity and diabetes. Opponents, however, argue that such taxes unfairly affect lower-income individuals and that people should have the freedom to choose what they eat and drink. In your opinion, is a tax on unhealthy foods a good public health strategy? Why?
Student response 1:
Student response 1: I think it's a very effective strategy. A tax would make people think twice before buying unhealthy products, which could lead to better dietary choices over time. Moreover, the revenue generated from the tax could be used to fund health education programs or subsidize healthier food options.
Student response 2:
Student response 2: I believe these taxes are a bad idea because they disproportionately harm people with lower incomes, who may rely on cheaper food options. It is not the government's place to control personal choices. Instead of taxes, we should focus on education so people can make informed decisions for themselves.
