Professor’s question:

Today we're discussing urban development. Many cities are investing in creating more public parks and green spaces. Proponents argue these areas improve mental well-being and encourage community gathering. However, opponents contend that this land could be better used for affordable housing or commercial development to boost the economy. Which use of limited urban land do you think is more important for a city's residents? Why?

Student response 1:

I believe green spaces are essential. They offer a place for relaxation and recreation, which is vital for mental health in a stressful city environment. Even though housing is important, a city without parks becomes a concrete jungle that is ultimately unhealthy for its residents.

Student response 2:

I think providing affordable housing should be the priority. A park is a nice benefit, but people first need a safe and affordable place to live. Therefore, using that valuable land for housing or for businesses that create jobs makes more practical sense for the community's immediate needs.
