Professor’s question:
Recently, the concept of a four-day workweek has gained popularity as a way to improve employee well-being. Advocates claim that a shorter week can lead to better work-life balance, reduced stress, and even increased productivity. However, critics are concerned it could be impractical for certain industries and might lead to longer, more stressful workdays. Do you think a four-day workweek is a positive development for workers?
Student response 1:
I definitely support the four-day workweek because it prioritizes employee mental health. Having an extra day off allows people to rest, manage personal tasks, and spend more time with family, which reduces burnout. Furthermore, employees who are well-rested are often more focused and productive during their work hours.
Student response 2:
I am not sure it's a good idea for every company. For instance, in customer service roles, a shorter workweek could lead to gaps in service and unhappy clients. Also, to finish the same amount of work, employees might have to work ten-hour days, which could be more exhausting.
