Professor: Today, we're going to introduce a concept central to developmental psychology: object permanence. This is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or otherwise sensed. For infants, this is a major developmental milestone. For instance, before an infant develops object permanence, if you hide a toy, they believe it's gone forever. After they develop it, they will actively search for the hidden toy. We typically see this skill emerge around eight months of age.
