Professor’s question:

Today we are discussing urban development. Many cities are encouraging the construction of large, multi-purpose shopping malls that offer retail, dining, and entertainment in one location. Proponents say these malls boost the local economy and create community hubs. Critics, however, argue they harm small, local businesses and create a generic, uniform culture. Do you think large shopping malls are a positive or negative development for a city? Why?

Student response 1:

I think large malls are a positive development. They create many jobs and attract visitors, which helps the city's economy. In addition, they provide a safe and convenient place for families to spend time together, especially when the weather is bad. Malls become central meeting spots for the community.

Student response 2:

I believe malls have a negative impact. They pull customers away from small, family-owned shops on main streets, causing those unique businesses to close. As a result, cities start to look the same, losing their individual character and local charm.
