Professor: In our last class, we discussed cognitive biases. Today I want to highlight a recent study on the "availability heuristic." This is our tendency to overestimate the likelihood of events that are more easily recalled. Researchers presented two groups with information. One group read dramatic news stories about crime, while the other read statistical reports. The first group consistently rated the city as more dangerous. This shows how vivid examples can skew our perception of reality more than objective data.
