Professor’s question:

There's a growing debate about the role of government in public health. Some people believe governments should implement stricter regulations on unhealthy foods, such as placing high taxes on sugary drinks, to combat obesity and related diseases. Others argue that this is an overreach of authority and that individuals should be free to make their own choices. Which side of the argument do you agree with? Why?

Student response 1:

I believe governments have a responsibility to promote public health, so I support regulations like sugar taxes. These measures can discourage unhealthy consumption and the revenue can be used to fund health education programs. For instance, similar taxes have led to a decrease in soda consumption in other places.

Student response 2:

I feel that this is a matter of personal freedom. While the government can provide information, it shouldn't punish people for their choices. Besides, such taxes often unfairly affect people with lower incomes. People should be educated to make better decisions, not forced into them through financial penalties.
