Professor’s question:
Many cities around the world face a common dilemma: should they preserve old, historic buildings, or demolish them to make way for modern development? Preserving these buildings maintains a city's cultural heritage and unique character. On the other hand, new construction can provide needed housing, offices, and economic growth. Which approach do you think is more beneficial for a city in the long term? Why?
Student response 1:
I believe preserving historic buildings is more beneficial. These structures are irreplaceable links to our past and give a city its unique identity, which can attract tourism and foster a sense of community. Even though new construction is important, we should prioritize protecting our shared history for future generations to appreciate.
Student response 2:
While history is important, I think cities should prioritize modern development. New buildings are often more energy-efficient and can be designed to meet the current needs of the population, such as providing affordable housing or modern business spaces. Therefore, focusing on progress is ultimately better for the city's residents.
