Professor: Let's turn our attention to prehistoric art, specifically the incredible cave paintings of Lascaux in southwestern France. Discovered by teenagers in 1940, these caves contain some of the most impressive artworks from the Paleolithic era, estimated to be about 17,000 years old. The walls are covered with hundreds of paintings, primarily of large animals like horses, bulls, and stags, which likely played a major role in the lives of these early humans. Unfortunately, this incredible site is extremely fragile. When the cave was opened to the public, the breath of thousands of visitors—specifically the carbon dioxide and humidity—began to damage the paintings. To preserve this treasure, the original cave was closed to the public in 1963. Now, visitors can see a meticulous replica nearby.
