Professor’s question:

Today we're examining the impact of social media on society. Some argue that social media platforms have a democratizing effect, giving a voice to people who were previously unheard and helping to organize social movements. Others contend that these platforms primarily spread misinformation and create social division by trapping users in echo chambers. Which of these effects do you believe is more significant? Why?

Student response 1:

I think the democratizing effect of social media is more significant. It gives ordinary people a powerful tool to share their perspectives and organize for causes they care about. For example, many important social justice movements have gained global attention primarily because activists were able to coordinate and spread their message online.

Student response 2:

I believe the spread of misinformation and social division is the more powerful consequence. While social media can be used for good, the algorithms are often designed to show people content that confirms their existing beliefs. As a result, it can be very difficult for people to have productive conversations, leading to increased polarization.
