Professor’s question:

Today, the role of zoos in our society is a topic of considerable debate. On one hand, modern zoos contribute to wildlife conservation through breeding programs and public education, helping to protect endangered species. On the other hand, some critics argue that keeping wild animals in captivity for human entertainment is unethical, regardless of the educational or conservation benefits. What is your opinion on the role of modern zoos? Should they continue to exist?

Student response 1:

I believe modern zoos are essential. They play a crucial role in conservation, especially for species on the brink of extinction. For instance, some animals only exist in zoos now. In addition, they educate the public, creating a connection that encourages people to support wildlife protection efforts.

Student response 2:

I think we should move away from the concept of zoos. Even in the best conditions, a zoo cannot replicate a wild animal's natural habitat, which can cause them stress. Because we have amazing wildlife documentaries and sanctuaries, we can learn about and support animals without keeping them captive.
