It refers to the use of strong contrasts between light and shadow in a painting to model three-dimensional forms and create a sense of drama. The artist Caravaggio was a master of this technique. His paintings often feature figures emerging from a dark background, highlighted by a single, intense light source. We'll analyze his works to see this.
