Professor’s question:

Today, we're discussing the impact of social media on well-being. Some researchers argue that platforms designed to connect us can actually lead to feelings of loneliness and lower self-esteem, as users compare their lives to the curated, idealized posts of others. In contrast, others claim these platforms provide vital social support and community. Which perspective do you find more convincing? Why?

I believe social media has a largely negative effect on self-esteem. It's very difficult not to compare yourself to others, which can lead to anxiety. For example, seeing everyone's vacation photos when you're stuck studying can be discouraging. The pressure to present a perfect life is significant.

I disagree because for many people, social media is a source of community. For instance, individuals with niche hobbies or from minority groups can find others like them from all over the world. This connection can be incredibly positive and supportive, boosting their sense of belonging and well-being.
