Professor: So, today we'll be discussing the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance. This refers to the mental discomfort a person experiences when they hold two or more contradictory beliefs, or when their beliefs conflict with their actions. For example, a person might continue to smoke cigarettes, even though they know that smoking is very harmful to their health. This conflict between their behavior and their knowledge creates dissonance. We often try to reduce this discomfort by changing our beliefs or our behaviors.
