Write for an Academic Discussion Test #035
Write for an Academic Discussion
A professor has posted a question about a topic and students have responded with their thoughts and ideas. Make a contribution to the discussion.
You will have 10 minutes to write.
Your professor is teaching a class on campus life.
In your response, you should do the following.
- • Express and support your opinion.
- • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.
Professor’s question:
Many universities are debating whether to require first-year students to live in on-campus dormitories. The argument in favor is that it helps new students build a sense of community, make friends, and get accustomed to university life more easily. Conversely, some argue that this requirement can be an unnecessary financial burden and limits students' freedom of choice. Should universities mandate on-campus housing for first-year students? Why or why not?
Student response 1:
Yes, I believe universities should require it because living in a dorm is a crucial part of the first-year experience. It forces students to be more social and learn independence in a supportive environment. For instance, students can easily form study groups with their neighbors, which helps them academically.
Student response 2:
I don't think it should be mandatory. Living on campus is often much more expensive than renting an apartment off-campus, which creates a financial hardship for many students and their families. Moreover, some students are more mature and prefer the quiet and independence of living on their own.
